An Obama success story

Those who claim that the entirety of the Obama presidency is a failure are incorrect in that assessment. There is one area where the Administration has been wonderfully successful: Dominating market share in the Mexican weapons market. The US Government under Barack Obama is to the Mexican weapons trade what Microsoft is to the computer software market…

President Barack Obama blames the little guy, but Uncle Sam — and not the small-business gun dealer — is the primary supplier of heavy weapons to the Mexican drug cartels in America’s “Third War.”

As noted in a previous article, U.S. military hardware gets to the cartels by one of three routes:

1.  U.S. Defense Department shipments to Latin America, known and tracked by the U.S. State Department as “foreign military sales.”

2.  Weapons ordered by the Mexican government, tracked by the State Department as “direct commercial sales.”

3.  Aging but plentiful arsenals of military weapon stores in Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

In each and every instance, the U.S. government is responsible for supplying weapons to the cartels: either directly via the ATF’s Gunrunner scandal routes, or indirectly via military sales and military assistance.

The Obama Administration is the big player in the Mexican market for military arms. And as our back-of-the-napkin calculation shows, the US government is likely the dominant supplier of civilian arms as well. So would it be fair to characterize the Obama presidency as an abject failure? That depends on how you measure success.
