Guns and “The Fairer Sex”

Over at Girls Just Wanna Have Guns, Edwin Leap has a laugh at the expense of the inconsistent anti-gun left. They bristle at the assertion that there are some things that men can do that women cannot; unless that something is to resist the wiles of gun industry marketeers.

This is fascinating to me.  This is 2013.  The equality of women is not an issue for discussion.  Women serve in high public office, women fly high performance combat aircraft and command Naval vessels.  Soon, it appears they will serve alongside men in ground combat.  Women own and run huge industries.  Women are movers and shakers, cultural icons and scientific innovators.  Women teach in universities, give us our news, analyze our politics and raise our children.  Women ride motorcycles and buy sports cars.  They are athletes, construction workers, truck-drivers and welders.  Women pursue and arrest criminals as law-enforcement officers.  Women are capable of doing whatever they want.

So, in light of this, is the political and cultural left really worried that the big, bad, paternalistic, old gun industry has tricked the fairer sex into buying and owning guns?  It’s such a silly assertion that I find myself at a loss of words.

The anti-gun left would have us believe that merely applying a pink finish to a gun, or slapping Hello Kitty onto it, makes that gun irresistible to women. To them, there’s no other “logical” explanation as to why a woman would want a gun. It must be trickery!

The author points out that, far from falling for advertising hype, women understand biology and math. They also understand the use of tools. An inescapable fact of biology is that the average man is bigger and stronger than the average woman. This is called sexual dimorphism; the fact that male Homo Sapiens look different than do female Homo Sapiens. Men are also more prone to violence than are women. This isn’t always a bad thing. Who would want our country protected by non-violent Marines? But it is a problem when a woman finds herself, or her child, as the object of a man’s violent urges. Since we can think of the physical differences between men and women as mathematical ratios, what a woman needs in such a situation is something that adds to her side of the equation. And a gun is a tool that does just that. A gun “makes the mathematics of violence work in their favor.”

Contrary to what the anti-gun left would have us believe, women understand this. They aren’t responding to clever marketing when they buy guns; they are responding to a biological imperative. A woman who wants to protect herself and her offspring needs a tool that allows her to do so against a larger, stronger attacker. She may ultimately choose the pink gun over the same model with a blued finish, but what really makes her choose that gun over any other is its ability to aid her in defending herself and her children from a man bent upon violence. It’s the gun that’s underneath the pink finish that she’s really buying.

But to an anti-gun leftist, this is simply unthinkable. Women are supposed to know that they are to wait for the police to show up; not “take matters into their own hands.” In other words, wait for a man to show up to save her. In any other area of life, this would be recognized as a thoroughly sexist attitude. But not, for the left, when it comes to guns. When is comes to guns, they tell us, women are “naturally” predisposed to shy away from them. Any desire to actually buy one must be because they fell for some man’s advertizing campaign.

What a pity that the left considers women so pathetically simple and weak.  And what delicious irony that a libertarian and conservative movement like gun-ownership should make the ‘pro-woman’ left look so utterly silly.

Facts can be troublesome things

“Be careful what you wish for. You might get it.”
-An ancient proverb

Remember those executive orders President Obama gave post-Sandy Hook? They were mostly orders to himself; a to-do list for the Executive branch. Among these was an order to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to gin-up some nice, fresh, anti-gun statistics for The One to use.

He should have been more careful of what he wished for.

The CDC filed its report, but the results weren’t what the boss was hoping for. Facts can be such troublesome things. Among the unfortunate facts uncovered by CDC were data showing that those who resist violent criminals using firearms are far less likely to be injured than those using other defensive techniques or tools. Put another way, the woman who defends herself against a rapist by using a 9mm handgun is less likely to be injured than the woman who used pepper spray.

All-in-all, the Obama ordered report ended up finding more pros than cons in regards to the right to an open or concealed weapon. The report also reminds us of the numerous causes of gun deaths, citing that most gun deaths are at the hands of those who used a gun for their suicide — not homicide. The report highlights the poor state of America’s suffering mental health. The report states that suicide by guns outweighs the amount of deaths caused by violent crimes by 61%.

We gun owners have known this for a long time. Our guns have never leapt out of the gun safe of their own accord and gone on murderous rampages. None of us or our gun owning friends have succumb to our firearms’ Jedi mind tricks and started shooting strangers at random. We know that if you take a gun out and set it on a table, it will continue to just sit there, doing nothing. (Didn’t Sir Isaac Newton already cover this?!) We didn’t need to have our tax dollars spent by the CDC figuring out what’s common knowledge: Firearms provide more benefits than risks to their owners. Now, one might think that having the CDC spend money consulting with Capt. Obvious would be a good thing if The One would actually listen to their results and leave us alone. But alas, anti-gun liberals have long shown a particularly robust immunity to facts; especially the troublesome ones.

California: Anti-Gun Bills Continue to be Heard in Senate and House Committees

From NRA-ILA:

California: Anti-Gun Bills Continue to be Heard in Senate and House Committees

Posted on June 28, 2013

Time is running out in Sacramento!

You MUST contact Your state Senator and Assembly Committee members TODAY

Next week there are several anti-gun bills expected to be heard in their respective state Senate and Assembly Committee.  It is critical that you call AND e-mail members of these committees to ensure they hear your voice of OPPOSITION to these onerous and misguided anti-gun bills.  Let members of these committees know that these bills will do nothing to reduce violent crime and will only turn currently law-abiding citizens into criminals should they be enacted.  Don’t forget to forward this alert to family, friends and sportsmen throughout California because it is going to take a united effort to stop these egregious and deeply flawed bills.

Assembly Bill 169 (Dickinson) is scheduled to be heard in the state Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday, July 1.  AB 169 would prohibit the transfer of millions of lawfully owned handguns and jeopardize the continued ownership of constitutionally protected firearms.  Current California law allows handguns that are not on the state Department of Justice (DOJ) approved handgun roster to be sold or transferred to another individual through consignment sale or as a private party transfer, provided that the sale is completed through a licensed firearms retailer.  AB 169 would BAN the sale of ALL handguns (NEW and USED) that are NOT on the DOJ approved roster of “safe” handguns.

There are MILLIONS of handguns that were manufactured and/or purchased prior to the enactment of the DOJ approved handgun roster law.  Most of the handguns lawfully possessed in California today, are not currently on the California Department of Justice (DOJ) approved handgun roster of new handguns that licensed dealers are allowed to sell to the public nor will those handguns ever be allowed to be added to the “approved” roster.  If enacted, AB 169 would leave gun owners who lawfully purchased a handgun with no legal means to sell or transfer their handgun.  AB 169 passed in the state Assembly by a 43 to 24 vote on May 2.  To view the NRA’s letter of opposition for AB 169, please click here.  Contact information for members of the Senate Appropriations Committee is provided below.

Assembly Bill 48  is scheduled to be heard on Tuesday, July 2, in the state Senate Public Safety Committee. Please call AND e-mail members of the Senate Public Safety Committee and respectfully urge them to OPPOSE AB 48.  Contact information for members of the Senate Public Safety Committee is provided below. Assembly Bill 48 (Skinner) BANS the sale of magazine parts kits that can hold more than ten cartridges, and requires mandatory reporting of law-abiding citizens who purchase more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition with a five-day period.  AB 48 passed in the state Assembly by a 46 to 26 vote on May 29.  To view the NRA’s letter of opposition to AB 48, please click here.

Also, on Tuesday, July 2, the state Assembly Public Safety Committee is scheduled to hear several unreasonable and unwarranted anti-gun bills that are listed below.  Contact information to respectfully urge members of the Assembly Public Safety Committee to OPPOSE SB 53, SB 108, SB 293 and SB 755 is provided below.

Senate Bill 53 (DeLeon) requires persons to buy an annual ammunition purchase permit, requires the registration and thumbprint of the purchaser for each ammunition purchase, and bans online and mail order sales of ammunition to Californians.  SB 53 passed in the state Senate by a 23 to 15 vote on May 29.  To view the NRA’s letter of opposition to SB 53, please click here.

Senate Bill 108 (Yee) requires mandatory locked storage of firearms in a locked house regardless of whether anyone is present.  SB 108 passed in the state Senate by a 21 to 17 vote on May 28.  To view the NRA’s letter of opposition to SB 108, please click here.

Senate Bill 293 (DeSaulnier) BANS the sale of conventional handguns, if the state Department of Justice approves the sale of “Owner Authorized – Smart” handgun technology. SB 293 passed in the state Senate by a 22 to 14 voteon May 29.  To view the NRA’s letter of opposition to SB 293, please click here.

Senate Bill 755 (Wolk) expands the list of persons prohibited from owning a firearm, including persons who have operated cars and boats while they are impaired commonly referred to as DUI.  SB 755 passed in the state Senate by a 25 to 12 vote on May 29.  To view the NRA’s letter of opposition to SB 755, please click here.

NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT: Vol. 20, No. 26 06/28/2013

Case Against Student Who Wore NRA T-Shirt to School Dismissed

On June 27th, in a positive resolution to a case which has captured the attention of advocates for First and Second Amendment rights, the case against 14-year-old Logan Middle School Honor Student Jared Marcum of Logan, W.V., was dismissed with prejudice. Marcum had been charged with obstructing an officer following an incident stemming from a Logan Middle School faculty member’s reaction to Marcum wearing to school an NRA t-shirt featuring the words “Protect Your Right” and an image of a semiautomatic rifle. The charge against Jared carried a possible sentence of incarceration.

The entire episode started back on April 18th when Marcum was wearing his NRA t-shirt in school and a Logan Middle School band teacher took exception to Marcum’s choice of attire. The Logan County Schools’ Dress Code, however, had no restriction on clothing featuring firearms. Nevertheless, the teacher demanded that Marcum remove his shirt or turn it inside out. Marcum refused, citing his First Amendment rights, at which point the other Logan County school officials became involved. During the incident, Marcum’s classmates were vocal in support of him.

National Education Association Vice President: NRA, Second Amendment Supporters “Are Going to Hell”

Speaking to all 3,000 of the assembled “progressive activists” at this year’s Netroots Nation conference, National Education Association vice president Lily Eskelsen Garcia boldly declared a “prophecy” about the eternal destiny of NRA and Second Amendment supporters, and of politicians and lobbyists working to promote gun rights: “I’m not an ordained minister; I’m not a theologian, but these guys are going to hell.”

Wow. Going to hell for supporting the Second Amendment? That type of radical thinking might explain the very high incidence of ridiculous cases involving over-zealous school officials misinterpreting and wrongly enforcing “zero-tolerance” rules–and doing so without exercising even the smallest measure of sound judgment, discretion or basic common sense.

Call Sen. Manchin, Tell him you Oppose his Misguided Legislation

In his latest move to advance the gun control agenda of President Barack Obama and billionaire anti-gun Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Senator Manchin continues to misrepresent his failed legislation.

Senator Manchin’s proposal criminalizes certain private transfers of firearms between honest citizens — requiring lifelong friends, neighbors and some family members to get federal government permission to exercise a fundamental right or face prosecution.

As we have noted previously, expanding background checks, at gun shows or elsewhere, will not stop mass shootings, reduce violent crime or keep our kids safe in their schools. In addition, the amendment would open the door to a national registry of gun owners. According to a recent internal memo from the Department of Justice, so-called “universal” background checks will not work without requiring a national gun registry.

CAL-ERT: Action required! Help defeat the AB 711 lead ammo ban

Vote To Ban Traditional Ammunition To Be Heard In Committee

AB 711 would make California the first state in the nation to prohibit the use of all lead ammunition for hunting. This bill’s next stop is the Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday, June 24, 2013, where it is expected to be brought up for a vote. We need a strong voice!

Extensive research has shown that traditional Lead ammunition does NOT pose a health hazard for hunters

HuntForTruth.org urges all hunters, recreational shooters and gun owners to actively oppose AB 711.

We strongly urge you to contact each member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Please forward this alert to your family, friends, fellow sportsmen and gun owners throughout California and urge them to do the same.

Important facts regarding AB711

1)   The lead in ammunition is NOT the same as the highly toxic, chemical lead in old paint and gasoline.

2)    Federal and state health department studies have concluded that lead ammunition is not a human health risk.

3)    Studies have found that lead ammunition does not cause lead poisoning in wildlife.

4)    Despite 99% hunter compliance, the AB821 lead ammunition ban has failed to reduce lead poisoning in condors.

5)    AB711 fails to address the alternative sources of lead in the environment that are poisoning condors and other wildlife.

Be sure to check out HuntForTruth.org’s shocking new video opposing AB 711 and its recent hard-hitting rebuttal to the bill sponsor’s alleged “facts” sheet in support of the bill. This video and the rebuttal reveal the truth regarding lead ammunition, and expose the misinformation being spread by the ammunition ban proponents in their latest attack on hunters that is being disguised as a campaign to “get the lead out.”

NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT: Vol. 20, No. 25 06/21/2013

Outrage of the Week: Bloomberg Gun Control Group Claims Terrorist was “Victim of Gun Violence”

This week’s outrage comes to us from New Hampshire, where New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun group–Mayors Against Illegal Guns–labeled a terrorist as a “victim of gun violence.”

As part of a gun control rally this week in Concord, a MAIG-sponsored “No More Names” tour bus arrived and anti-gun organizers read the names of those “killed with guns” since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school last year. Chief among the questionable list of gun violence victims was Boston Marathon terror bombing mastermind, Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

When Tsarnaev’s name was read, the crowd booed, and one of the attending pro-gun counter-protesters–who significantly outnumbered the antis–shouted, “he’s a terrorist”–a point obviously lost, at the time, by the MAIG “No More Names” group.

Biden Regroups, Promises Fight

At a press conference this week, Vice President Joe Biden (D) warned that he and the Obama administration have not given up on their proposed gun control measures, declared that the administration would “beat” NRA by passing gun control measures, and vowed that legislators who oppose the administration on gun control will “pay a political price” for doing so.

As reported in the Washington Post, Biden said to an audience that included Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, “As proud as the president and I am of progress we’ve made, we need Congress to act. We need everyone in the country to know the fight is not over. Far from it.” He further stated, “Janet Napolitano has not given up. Eric Holder has not given up.”

California: More Anti-Gun Bills Scheduled to be Heard Next Week and Two Anti-Gun Bills Pass on Party-Line Vote

Posted on June 15, 2013

Time is running out!

You MUST contact your state Senator and Senate Committee Members TODAY

The following bills are scheduled to be heard on Tuesday, June 18, in the Senate Public Safety Committee.  Please call AND e-mail members of the Senate Public Safety Committee and respectfully urge them to OPPOSE AB 180 and AB 231.  These onerous and misguided bills will do nothing to reduce violent crime and will only turn currently law-abiding citizens into criminals should they be enacted.  You cannot let that happen!  Please forward this alert to family, friends and sportsmen throughout California because it is going to take a united effort to stop this egregious and deeply flawed legislation.  Contact information for the members of the Senate Public Safety Committee is provided below.

Assembly Bill 180 (Bonta) repeals California’s firearm preemption law by granting Oakland an exemption to enact unique laws regarding possession, registration, licensing and subjecting gun owners to unknowing criminal liability when traveling through Oakland.  AB 180 passed in the state Assembly by a 46 to 29 vote on May 28.

Assembly Bill 231 (Ting) expands the current law for Criminal Storage of Firearms and child access.  This measure would not increase safety and would simply create unreasonable storage procedures which would take away law-abiding gun owners’ inherent right to self-defense.  A firearm owner acting with the utmost care and precaution would be held criminally liable “regardless of whether the person knows or reasonably knows that a child is likely to gain access to the firearm.”  A violation of this section can be punished as a FELONY.  AB 231 passed in the state Assembly by a 46 to 30 vote on May 28.

********************************

On Tuesday, June 11, Assembly Bill 169 and Assembly Bill 711 both passed in their respective Senate committees by a party-line vote.  These bills have been scheduled to be heard in the Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday, June 24.  Please call AND e-mail members of the Senate Appropriations Committee TODAY and respectfully urge them to OPPOSE these two extreme anti-gun and anti-hunting bills.  Contact information for members of this Committee is provided below.

Assembly Bill 169 (Dickinson) passed in the Senate Public Safety Committee by a 5 to 2 vote.

Assembly Bill 711 (Rendon) passed in the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee by a 7 to 2 vote.  AB 711 would make California the first state in the nation to prohibit the use of lead ammunition for ALL hunting.  Such a ban on traditional ammunition would have devastating effects on hunting and conservation.  You cannot let this happen!  Many hunters would not be able to afford the higher cost of non-traditional ammunition.

Senate Appropriations Committee:

Senator Kevin de León (Chairman)
Senator Mimi Walters (Vice Chairman)
Senator Ted Gaines
Senator Jerry Hill
Senator Ricardo Lara
Senator Alex Padilla
Senator Darrell Steinberg
