Pride and Prejudice? Hollywood Mogul Aims to Attack NRA with New Film

Hollywood producer and Obama mega fundraiser Harvey Weinstein used an appearance on The Howard Stern Show Wednesday to announce what he billed as a new anti-NRA movie, reportedly titled, The Senator’s Wife. During the interview, Weinstein called NRA a “disaster area” and said of the film, “I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take this head-on. And they’re going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.” Weinstein indicated that the movie is also intended to decimate the gun industry and leave viewers thinking, “Gun stocks, I don’t want to be involved in that stuff. It’s going to be like crash and burn.” (We’ll leave it to you to decide whether ordinary people, or just entertainment tycoons, normally leave a movie pondering stock portfolios.)

Concealed Carry Licensee Gets Ungracious Reception by Police in “Charm City”

As anybody who is a member of NRA knows, we support the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who put themselves in harm’s way for the benefit of us all. We understand that most law enforcement officers take their oaths to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States seriously. We also understand that untold thousands of reassuring interactions occur between citizens and law enforcement officers every day.

What we don’t understand are reports like this one arising from an incident in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Tampa Bay Tribune recounts the disturbing story of a man who found himself on the receiving end of some aggressive and heavy-handed police tactics, apparently for nothing more than being under suspicion of owning a firearm.

Another Anti-Gun Mayor Runs Afoul of the Law

We have previously reported on the incongruity of behavior demonstrated by the relatively long list of mayors who are associated with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” organization who have been implicated in illegal behavior. To that list we can add yet another name–former Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, Mayor James Schiliro. Ironically, the anti-gun mayor is headed to jail after unlawfully detaining a young man while armed with a gun.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Schiliro was sentenced to 10-to-20 months for an alcohol-fueled episode last February in which he had a police car bring a former neighbor–a 20-year-old to whom he said he was attracted–to his home, made him drink wine, and refused to let him leave for 3 1/2 hours.

Numerically Challenged Journalist Wages Weak Attack on NRA, Kleck

Nearly a century ago, the great jazz drummer Warren “Baby” Dodds was asked for his opinion of other drummers of his day. Dodds, a perfectionist, but also a gentleman, simply said, “All who are drumming aren’t drummers.”

That brings us to the journalist Michael Allen, who, on Monday, took advantage of the fact that anyone with a computer and an internet connection can write just about anything for the entire online world to see. In this instance, Allen’s “reporting” was aimed at the NRA and award-winning Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck.

“The NRA has been pushing the claim that guns in America are more likely to be used for self-defense than to commit a crime,” Allen wrote. Citing a widely discredited, anti-gun website, Allen added, “According to MediaMatters.org, the NRA likely uses discredited research to advance their claim that ‘firearms are used more than two million times a year for personal protection.’”

Citing Second Amendment, Judge Issues Injunction Against Federal Gun Ban

Last Friday, Chief Judge B. Lynn Winmill of the United States District Court for the District of Idaho issued a preliminary injunction to enjoin the Army Corps of Engineers from enforcing a regulation that, with limited exceptions, banned possession of firearms on lands under the Corps’ control. The case, Morris v. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was brought by plaintiffs in western Idaho who use Corps’ lands for recreation, including camping. The plaintiffs challenged the regulation as being an unconstitutional violation of the Second Amendment because of the burden the regulation placed on their right to self-defense in their temporary homes (tents) and their right to carry firearms for self-defense.
