NRA Applauds House for Passing NRA-backed SHARE Act

The NRA praises members of the U.S. House of Representatives who voted to pass H.R. 3590–the “Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act.” The measure, which passed with broad bipartisan support by a vote of 268 to 154, promotes and protects the rights of hunters in a variety of critical ways.

“Hunting is part of our unique American heritage and the NRA is committed to preserving it,” said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. “Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) has been a stalwart friend to our nation’s hunters and on behalf of our 5 million NRA members we thank him for his leadership on this important legislation. The NRA will continue to work with the Congress to protect the rights of hunters from increasingly hostile and litigious environmental groups seeking to curtail our freedoms.”

A Return to Sanity? Lawmakers Push Back Against Zero-Tolerance Abuses

We’ve all seen warning labels on products that leave us scratching our heads and wondering, is that really necessary? A popular sleeping pill, for example, cautions it may cause drowsiness. Chainsaws have stickers admonishing users not to hold the saw by the blade. A certain hand-held hairdryer even contains an advisory that it is not for use while sleeping.

Although most people could figure these things out for themselves, many of these labels likely come with a back story too bizarre for ordinary imaginations to conceive.

Such is the case with Florida HB 7029, which on Wednesday passed out of the House Education K-12 Subcommittee by a 13-0 vote on its way to introduction. Some are simply calling it the “Pop-Tart” Bill or the “Right to be Kids” Act. We might well wish that those who educate and oversee America’s children during the school day would instinctively understand that a toaster pastry could not reasonably be mistaken for a handgun, but a mounting list of back stories have unfortunately proven otherwise. Thus, HB 7029 emphasizes the need for often well-intentioned but increasingly overzealous educators to pause, take a breath, and consider the facts before mindlessly applying “zero tolerance” disciplinary polices aimed at keeping harmful weapons out of schools.

Police Using Data Concerning Lawful Gun Ownership to Ratchet Up Scrutiny, Escalate Tactics

In recent years much progress has been made in protecting the privacy of gun owners by restricting access to gun licensing and right-to-carry permit data, with a majority of states now limiting the availability of this information to law enforcement officers for official use. Unfortunately, two recent incidents have highlighted how government data indicating firearm ownership can be used by law enforcement officials as justification to escalate encounters with gun owners.

The latest episode took place February 4th in Des Moines, Iowa, during the execution of a search warrant by the police department of Ankeny, Iowa, on the residence of concealed carry permit holder Justin Ross and his mother Sally Prince. The search warrant was for electronics and clothes police allege are connected to a case of credit card fraud.

Around 10:20 a.m., a group of at least eight Ankeny officers clad in SWAT gear, with weapons drawn, arrived at the home, delivered a cursory knock on the door, and then used a battering ram to break into the house. The occupants, fearful that the commotion indicated a violent burglary, hid inside the home. Surveillance cameras inside and outside the house captured a portion of the raid, before they were dismantled by the search team.

Two Anniversaries Gun Control Supporters Aren’t Celebrating

Gun control supporters have lately used the 20th anniversary of Bill Clinton’s signing of the Brady Act into law as an excuse to repeat their demand for “universal” background checks. Even though most people who commit crimes with guns defeat the Brady Act by getting their guns by theft, on the black market, or from straw purchasers, anti-gunners have portrayed the law as having saved countless lives.

Nevertheless, the gun ban movement is altogether ignoring two other significant anniversaries associated with its efforts.

No Guns on Gun Ban Signs?

When it comes to the anti-gunners’ viewpoint, don’t be too hasty in thinking that things can’t get more ridiculous than they already are, because–as this story illustrates–they most assuredly can.

This week, the Daily Caller reported that, in response to a law requiring the posting of small, “no guns allowed” stickers where the carry of concealed firearms is still banned, some school officials in the Chicago suburbs are deeply troubled over the fact that the signs banning guns actually show a very basic image of all things…a gun! In other words, they’re disgruntled over the fact that an image of a gun appears on signs banning guns!

Move Over Maxim; American Rifleman is In: NRA’s Flagship Magazine Enters Nation’s Top 25

As reported this week by Advertising Age, American Rifleman–NRA’s flagship magazine, and one of three magazines that members have an option of receiving as part of their membership–posted a 29.3% boost in circulation in the second half of last year. That leap, to an average circulation of 2.2 million from 1.7 million, was enough to propel American Rifleman past Maxim magazine into America’s top 25 magazines by circulation.

American Rifleman is the largest circulation firearms magazine in the world, and has been in business as a magazine since 1885–making it the world’s oldest firearm magazine as well. American Rifleman features stories of interest to gun enthusiasts of every kind–from competitive shooters and hunters to reloaders and gun collectors–and the magazine also delivers impartial reviews of rifles, shotguns, handguns and shooting equipment, technical analysis and expert advice, state and federal legislative updates, and regional reports on local events and facilities.

New Book Contains Lessons from History on Civilian Disarmament

Author, attorney, and eminent Second Amendment scholar Stephen P. Halbrook has released an acclaimed new book that documents with painstaking detail perhaps the most diabolical gun control effort of the 20th Century. Dr. Halbrook is also a research fellow as the Independent Institute, which published this latest volume in his considerable body of work.

Based on newly-discovered, secret documents from German archives, diaries and newspapers of the time, Gun Control in the Third Reich presents the definitive, yet hidden history of how the Nazi regime made use of gun control to disarm and repress its enemies and consolidate power. While voluminous scholarship has documented the Third Reich and the Holocaust, this is the first thorough examination of the laws restricting firearm ownership that rendered Hitler’s political opponents, as well as the Jews, defenseless. It also makes a compelling case that the National Socialist regime considered suppression of firearm ownership by disfavored groups a critical element of achieving its objectives.
